Upcoming opportunities for NGO Engagement with the UN from June 2016

There are a number of upcoming opportunities for civil society groups to engage with the UN human rights systems.

HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

The Council’s 32nd regular session was suspended on 1 July 2016. The President of the Council stated that the session would resume at a time and date to be announced. Information and updates will be published here.

The organisational meeting for the 33rd regular session of the Human Rights Council will take place on 29 August 2016 Palais des Nations, Room XX. Information and updates will be published here.

The 33rd regular session of the Human Rights Council will be held from 13 September to 30 September 2016 at Palais des Nations, Room XX.  Information and updates will be published here.

UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW

The 27th session of the UPR Working Group will be held from April to May 2017. The following States will be reviewed: Bahrain, Ecuador, Tunisia, Morocco, Indonesia, Finland, United Kingdom, India, Brazil, Philippines, Algeria, Poland, Netherlands, South Africa. TREATY BODIES

The 117th session of the Human Rights Committee is taking place at Palais Wilson, Ground Floor from 20 June 2016 to 15 July 2016. The Committee will consider the following State reports during the session: Argentina, Burkina Faso, Denmark, Ecuador, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Kuwait. The Committee will also consider and adopt a list of issues for the following countries: Italy, Serbia, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Belgium, Lithuania and Norway. The 64th session of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women will be held on from 4 to 22 July 2016. The Committee will consider the following State reports during the session: Albania, France, Mali, Myanmar, Philippines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Uruguay. The Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women will hold its 66th pre-sessional Working Group from 25 to 29 July 2016 at Palais des Nations, room XVIII and will consider the following State reports: El Salvador, Germany, Jordan, Federated States of Micronesia, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Ukraine. It will also consider the list of issues prior to reporting for Israel.

The Committee against Torture will hold its 58th session from 25 July to 12 August 2016 at Palais Wilson 1st Floor. It will consider the following State reports: Burundi, Honduras, Kuwait, Mongolia. The proposed programme of work is available here.

The 11th session of The Committee on Enforced Disappearance will be held from 3 October to 14 October 2016 at Palais des Nations, First Floor conference room (3-7 October) and Room XIII (10-14 October). The Committee will consider the following State reports during the session: Bosnia and Herzegovina and Colombia. It will also adopt a list of issues for the following countries: Cuba, Ecuador and Senegal.

WORKING GROUPS

The Working Group on the Issue of Discrimination Against Women in Law and Practice will hold its 16th session from 18 to 22 July 2016 in New York.

Working Group on Arbitrary Detention will hold its 76th session from 22 August to 26 August 2016 at Palais des Nations, Room XXIII.

Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, from 15 August 2016 to 23 August 2016.

Mexico

Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises, from 29 August 2016 to 7 September 2016.

Kuwait

Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children from 4 September 2016 to 9 September 2016.

Croatia

 

Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, from 27 September 2016 to 7 October 2016.

Serbia

Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, from 3 October 2016 to 14 October 2016.

Australia

Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, from 4 October 2016 to 18 October 2016.
