Message from ISHR's new chairperson Lucia Nader

16.12.2016

We’re thrilled to announce Lucia Nader as the new chairperson of the ISHR board. Here’s her message of thanks to you.

Lucia Nader, ISHR chairperson

Dear friends,

We each have our part to play in promoting and protecting human rights.

Thank you for playing yours.

Whether it’s speaking out against discrimination on public transport or in the workplace, whether it’s taking to the streets to protest against authoritarianism or austerity, or whether it’s sharing information about human rights over Facebook or the dinner table, we all have a role to play.

One very tangible contribution we can all make is to support ISHR.

I’m delighted to have recently commenced in the role of chairperson of the ISHR board and I’m delighted to count you as someone with an active interest in ISHR's work. It’s passionate people like you that enable us to do what we do.

As you may have noticed, we are running an appeal to help fund our 2017 Human Rights Defenders Advocacy Programme.

As someone who has participated in and benefited immensely from ISHR’s intensive training programmes, I know how effective the ISHR team is at equipping human rights defenders with the knowledge, tools and networks to combat injustice and deliver systemic change.

I’ve witnessed and worked to make rights a reality for people living in extremely vulnerable conditions. People like Mrs Kim, who was detained in a prison camp in North Korea for 30 years, or Mrs Consuelo and her daughter, Antonia, who I met crossing the border from Mexico to the US to escape violence.

Through their eyes I have seen the powerful ways in which national, regional and international human rights laws and systems can contribute to concrete change. With its expertise and partners all around the world, ISHR delivers that change.

I urge you to get behind the appeal with a donation which – big or small – will directly support a human rights defender to participate in our training. (Click here for a breakdown of the impact your donation will have.)

In a rapidly changing environment, ISHR remains nimble and innovative. Challenging tyrants and speaking truth to power isn’t new to us – it’s core business for ISHR and the human rights defenders we support.

I’m delighted to know that you’re in our corner.

With your support I’m excited as to what we can achieve together in 2017.

All the best.

Lucia Nader

ISHR chairperson.
