The issue of sexual orientation featured again throughout the Third Committee (October to November 2010) and deeply divided States along regional lines. Although the discussions demonstrated just how far the international community has to travel before it extends international human rights protections to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people, they also prompted the US to step forward as a lead advocate for LGBTI rights at the UN. The US’ commitment to speak up and be proactive on the issue, together with massive mobilisation by LGBTI NGOs globally, led to one of the most anticipated plenary meetings on record. Read more...
