An update from ISHR's Director Phil Lynch regarding this week's historic vote at the UN and our current fundraising appeal.
What a sweet end to a hard year!
The response to our fundraising appeal for our human rights defender scholarship programme has been tremendous. Thanks to passionate supporters like you, we’ve received $32,186 with two weeks to go.
And yesterday we won a landmark vote in the UN’s General Assembly. For the first time in history, the world’s peak political body has effectively confirmed that, no matter who you love or who you are, you are entitled to be protected from violence and discrimination.
Working alongside ISHR’s expert staff in New York and in partnership with leading organisations like ILGA, ARC International and OutRight, past ISHR scholarship recipients played a decisive role in securing this historic success. We’ll now work together to support the newly appointed UN expert and past ISHR board member, Vitit Muntarbhorn, to fulfill this vital mandate.
So far our December fundraising appeal has raised enough money to cover the costs of five full scholarships for 2017.
It would be fantastic if we could make this ten: Ten defenders fully equipped to combat injustice and deliver systemic change just as they did yesterday in New York.
